Being totally comfortable through the uncomfortable.
Your Promise to Yourself
Heal the Human. Heal the Home.
…a promise worth keeping.
The Studio
Five Element Architecture is a small, eclectic studio with a big appetite for solving things in unusual ways. We bring architecture, building science and the ancient five elements together under one roof.
Our approach is simple: we’d rather guide you to the right answer than inform you of it. Comfort and longevity are our north star — get a home feeling right, and most everything else tends to follow.
We’re a small Melbourne studio (though we flex our muscles all over Australia) with one slightly stubborn belief: a home should be designed around the life inside it, not the other way around. We’d rather tell you what you want help you discover it — hand over a thick compliance report guide you to the answer that’s genuinely right for you.
Because comfort is the biggest lever you can pull: get it right and longevity, lower bills and a calmer life all come along for the ride. We never argue about coffee. we mostly argue about coffee.
coffee = a drink?
…or a cough-fee?

Founder · Registered Architect (VIC) · Certified Passivhaus Designer
“An Aussie, an architect, a building nerd — and a sucker for a good (or not-so-good) pun.”
Alex is a Melbourne architect and Certified Passivhaus Designer who believes a home should do more than photograph well — it should feel right to live in. Trained in both architecture and building physics, and drawn to the ancient five-element traditions, he founded Five Element Architecture to bring rigorous building science and timeless balance under one roof.

Graduate Architect
“I’m intrigued by our wonderful, ever-changing planet — and try to leave things slightly better than we found them.”
In her work, Katie is fascinated by how the decisions we make as architects shape our health, wellbeing and communities. With a broad awareness of building physics — how design can enhance energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact and create healthier indoor environments — she helps steer every project toward a healthy, balanced, easy-to-build outcome. Away from the desk you’ll find her practising yoga, adding to an overflowing pottery collection, and filling her toasties with kimchi — happiest on warm afternoons under shady trees, walking by the river and sharing meals. Inspired by passionate people and our ever-changing planet, Katie is grateful for the chance to work alongside clients and Alex, and looks forward to working out the best direction for your project, together.
Innovative architecture. Intuitive methods.
Doing the inner work — as a client and as an architect — first and foremost leads to the better home.
Most architects don’t practise building physics. Most building scientists aren’t architects. And almost no one brings the ancient traditions of balance and harmony to either. We do all three — and that rare overlap is where the magic happens.
One side keeps your home genuinely comfortable; the other keeps it in tune with the people who live in it. The result is a realistic, holistic kind of architecture that designs outcomes — homes that feel as good as they look.
